Articling

McLeod & Company LLP has a long history of hiring and retaining articling students who ultimately mature to join the partnership.  We prefer to grow from within, and it is generally our intention to retain those students we hire for articles in the hopes they will stay with us throughout their career.  A number of current partners articled with the firm, and they have spent their entire legal careers with McLeod & Company LLP.

A legal career is, in reality, a never-ending learning curve, so it is understood by our partners and associates alike that a certain amount of their time will be spent on instruction and assisting of our students.  We welcome the chance to shape new legal minds and recognize that it is a valuable investment in everyone’s future.

The articling program at McLeod & Company LLP follows a more informal structure as students are moved through our different departments in rotations of roughly 3 month intervals.  Their workload is generally supervised by their principal, and when they move into a department outside of their principal’s area of practice, every attempt is made to identify a departmental contact for them to follow up with when they have questions.  More often than not the lawyer from whom they are receiving work is more than happy to help them with any difficulties they may encounter.  It is also common for work from one department to carry over into a student’s rotation through another, so students often have quite a diverse array of files on their plate at once.

Mcleod & Company LLP predominately hires its articling students through the annual recruitment period as defined by the Law Society of Alberta. For the current year, the recruitment period begins Monday, June 7, 2010 and ends Friday, June 18, 2010. This year, McLeod and Company aims to hire three articling students. Applications are to be submitted by Friday, May 14, 2010.

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and transcripts and can be submitted to the attention of This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   and This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

McLeod & Company LLP does not have a formal summer student program. Therefore, applications for summer student positions are reviewed on a case by case basis. Our emphasis for hiring articling students is on the applications received and the interviews conducted during the recruitment period.
