Articling students

Substance is important and so is attitude. At McLeod Law, we look for bright, well-rounded students who are active in the community and value relationships. Many of our students grow with the firm to ultimately become partners. In fact, a number of our partners articled with us and built their legal careers at McLeod Law. We set you up for success. Students receive mentorship and go through our intensive professional development program that is designed to give you substantive legal knowledge and practice-management skills with hands-on, direct client contact.

Hiring process

We do an initial review of resumes and transcripts. Then, after the selection process, interviews are held. We hire an average of three articling students each year who rotate between both offices.

Legal Assistant - Corporate Securities

We are a mid-sized law firm of more than 55 lawyers with legal services in over 40 different areas. With an office located in the south of Calgary and one in the downtown core, we are conveniently located to serve our diverse clients across a broad range of legal services.

This Legal Assistant role requires a unique blend of skills and experience providing general and administrative support within the Corporate Group at our downtown offices in Manulife Place. The position will require a polished, confident and reliable assistant with the ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be organized, and client service focused.

Essential Functions

  • Drafting, preparing and proofreading correspondence, accounts and various transactional documents and forms.
  • Preparing closing documents and closing books.
  • Dealing with and responding to client inquiries expeditiously and conducting follow up; keeping the lawyers apprised of interactions in their absence.
  • Processing incoming and outgoing mail, including maintenance of email accounts and managing bring forwards.
  • General administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and meetings and booking meeting rooms.
  • Maintaining and organizing files, both electronic and hard copy as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Requirements

  • Legal Assistant diploma from an accredited college.
  • Minimum of three (3) to ten (10) years of legal assistant experience preferably related to corporate, securities, business law.
  • Excellent technical proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of Elite and experience working with document management systems an asset.
  • Excellent organizational/follow up skills demonstrating attention to detail, proofreading and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative with guidance from the lawyers to enable working independently in a fast-paced high-volume environment.
  • SEDAR experience would be an asset.
  • Strong client service orientation combined with the ability to manage multiple client needs.
  • Flexibility to occasionally work overtime.

Residential Real Estate Law Clerk

With an office located in the south of Calgary and one in the downtown core, we are conveniently located to serve our diverse clients across a broad range of legal services.

We are looking for a Residential Real Estate Law Clerk to work with our busy real estate practice group at our Bannister Road SE office.

Duties to Include:

  • Residential and builder real estate transactions – drafting and full process of legal and banking documents in the areas of purchase, sale and refinance from opening to closing file.
  • Conducting tax and title searches with attention to detail;
  • Communicate with clients, realtors and third parties in a professional and courteous manner;
  • Manage closing dates and other deadlines.
  • Other duties as may be required.

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • 2 - 7 years of experience closing real estate transactions
  • Legal Assistant Diploma from a recognized post‐secondary institution or combination of relevant education and experience
  • Experience with builder work an asset
  • Experience with Unity software an asset
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to deal directly with clients
  • High proficiency in MS Office and ability to learn new software and technology quickly
  • The ability to work some overtime as required
