Plaintiff Personal Injury Lawyer (Contract)

McLeod Law is seeking an experienced personal injury lawyer that is looking for a different kind of career as an independent contract lawyer; a career that has more flexibility and the ability to choose when they work, where they work and how many hours they work.  Lawyers who are interested in operating as non-exclusive, independent contractors, including strong defence-side personal injury litigators are welcome to apply.

  • Liaise with the client through the entire life of the file and/or manage particular steps in a variety of files
  • Gather medical documentation and analyze damages 
  • Build and maintain the client relationship by keeping them informed and involved
  • Manage the relationship with the insurance adjuster and/or opposing lawyer
  • Prepare settlement proposals and negotiate/mediate the settlement
  • 4-7 years of experience of relevant personal injury and/or defence work
  • Exceptional client management and customer service skills
  • Excellent skills in interpersonal relations and team work

Hiring criteria

We do an initial review of resumes and transcripts. Then, after the selection process, interviews are held. We hire an average of three articling students each year who rotate between both offices.

Accounting Analyst

McLeod Law is seeking an accounting analyst that will work closely with the Controller to ensure the integrity of the firm’s financial statements. This role is based at our South office location and involves reconciling account balances and bank statements, maintaining general ledger and preparing month-end procedures while ensuring accuracy and effectiveness in all accounting tasks.

Specific duties and responsibilities:
  • Assist with development and distribution of profitability reports as they relate to practice groups, subgroups, individual lawyers and matters
  • Assist client matter marginal analysis, client matter pricing and costing, client matter budget and reporting
  • Assist with the firm’s operating and capital budget
  • Analysis and reconciliation of general ledger accounts including depreciation schedules, prepaid accounts, and variance analysis
  • Preparation of various reports to the Compensation Committee
  • Preparation of Monthly Production Report
  • Assist with preparation of the monthly financial statements
  • Capital assets continuity and depreciation schedule
  • Assist in the preparation of semi-annual and annual profitability analysis 
Daily/Weekly/Monthly Tasks
  • Prepare and post daily deposits
  • Process and post credit card payments
  • Prepare and reconcile monthly GST payment
  • Enter, post and reconcile journal entries and monthly accruals
  • Report preparation 
  • Work with external auditors on reporting requirements
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reports
  • Prepare and reconcile quarterly and annual compensation of contract partners
  • Work closely with banking contacts for account changes, including general accounts, trust accounts and credit cards
  • Assist with WIP and AR management
  • Back-up for other accounting staff
  • Other duties assigned by Controller 
Skills and Requirements
  • Post-secondary education preferably in accounting and/or finance
  • Minimum four years of accounting experience, law firm preferred
  • Accounting designation or pursuing a designation an asset
  • Exceptional use of MS Office software, particularly advanced in MS Excel
  • SQL experience an asset
  • Exceptional analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with vendors and lawyers
  • Team player, proactive and willing to pitch-in, with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must have a good command of the English language
Working Conditions
  • Month-end based activities, often with tight deadlines during the first two weeks of the month
  • Ability to travel between offices as needed

Learning & Development Specialist

McLeod Law is looking for a Learning & Development Specialist to deliver advanced and basic-level classroom and in-person training on applications and systems. The training will be done via lunch and learns, one-on-one sessions, group sessions and e-learning. The Specialist also performs orientations for new hires, schedules and coordinates all technical training programs, develops and continually updates in-house training programs and all training material and curriculum. As an excellent technical writer, they prepare and maintain thorough end-user documentation regarding software applications and other computer system procedures. The Specialist also informs the technology department of any issues identified. 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in the implementation and firm-wide training for NetDocuments
  • Work with Human Resources and IT to on-board new hires on Mitel, BigHand, Learning Management System, Zoom and other applications
  • Train personnel and keep training materials current on all software and applications by attending webinars and seminars
  • Coordinate with third parties for outsourced training such as grammar courses, document styles and legal specific applications
  • Responsible for writing, organizing, distributing and updating all audio-recorded, electronic and written learning materials, including training manuals and other curriculum
  • Maintain the Learning Management System, including the policies and procedures, training materials and video recordings, and various training guides and manuals
  • Maintain viEval to assist with the performance evaluation process for both staff and associates
  • Maintains records of training activities and employee training progress
  • Other related duties and projects as required
Skills & Requirements
  • Excellent technical writing skills and verbal communications and training skills
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office applications required
  • Ability to learn new software and technology quickly
  • Completion of Post-Secondary diploma or certificate program in a related field 
  • 2 - 5 years experience in planning, developing and implementing training and professional development initiatives
  • Proficiency with NetDocuments an asset
  • Experience in a law firm or professional services firm preferred
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (LMS) with viDesktop preferred
