Articling students

Substance is important and so is attitude. At McLeod Law, we look for bright, well-rounded students who are active in the community and value relationships. Many of our students grow with the firm to ultimately become partners. In fact, a number of our partners articled with us and built their legal careers at McLeod Law. We set you up for success. Students receive mentorship and go through our intensive professional development program that is designed to give you substantive legal knowledge and practice-management skills with hands-on, direct client contact.

Hiring process

We do an initial review of resumes and transcripts. Then, after the selection process, interviews are held. We hire an average of three articling students each year who rotate between both offices.

Legal Assistant - Corporate Records

The Legal Assistant in Corporate Records supports a team that manages a large portfolio of corporate matters through the preparation of Annual Returns and other legal documents at a CORES I level. 

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, prepare, file, track all Annual Return Packages for a high-volume corporate department
  • Meet deadlines relating to the filing of the Annual Returns, provide regular reports to the Team Lead
  • Maintain digital minute books, including data entry into ALF, NetDocuments & Nikec Binder
  • Corporate Registry filings and registration matters
  • Assist in the preparation of other corporate level appropriate documents
  • Respond promptly to client needs
  • Work in a team environment sharing workloads and files
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Legal Assistant Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • 1+ years of experience as a Corporate Legal Assistant
  • Knowledge of ALF and NetDocuments a definite asset
  • Cores I an asset
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • A high level of skill in verbal and written communication
  • Ability to set priorities while dealing with conflicting situations and multiple demands

Legal Assistant - Resource Team

The Legal Assistant on the resource team performs clerical and office functions for Legal Assistants while they are out of the office and assists with the overflow of work on a day-to-day basis.

Responsibilities

  • Cover for Legal Assistants who are absent and ensure continued workflow primarily in our downtown office at Manulife Place but also in the south office on Bannister Road SE
  • Transcribe and type legal documents from dictation device or hand-written notes
  • Route or answer correspondence
  • Respond to telephone, email and in-person inquiries
  • Perform clerical, administrative and general office duties
  • Perform administrative duties with respect to accounting, opening and closing files, billing, etc.
  • Assist other Assistants and Lawyers
  • Prepare follow up information for the Legal Assistant to ensure the continuation of work upon the Legal Assistant's return to work
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Legal Assistant Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • 2 - 5 years’ experience in a legal assistant role in various areas of law, including Corporate, Business Law and Securities
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • A high level of skill in verbal and written communication
  • Ability to set priorities while dealing with conflicting situations and multiple demands
  • Digital dictation experience an asset
