Shelley Waite Presents on Advance Care Planning

Shelley Waite of our Wills & Estates Group will participate in a panel sharing experience and insights from practice and research to identify the challenges of doing effective Advance Care Planning and propose solutions and resources to help lawyers help their clients in this important area.

What is Advance Care Planning?

Advance care planning (ACP) is the process of discussing, and sometimes documenting, the wishes, preferences, and values a person has about his/her medical care for the future, when health may deteriorate.  ACP encourages dialogue between a person, his/her family, and the health care team that can guide medical decision-making even when a person becomes incapable of consenting to or refusing healthcare.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • describe the components of and barriers and enablers to effective ACP;
  • select strategies and resources to use in their own practice to engage clients in ACP and improve the effectiveness of their clients’ planning activities; and
  • contribute to inter-professional initiatives to improve ACP in legal and healthcare settings in Alberta.

This course is a accredited for professional development credits of the Law Society of Alberta and is a collaboration of the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health and the ACP-CRIO.
